This Thematic Unit will provide an introduction to European Union (EU) Law. The module begins with an overview of the development of the EU from its early stages of integration to the most recent Treaty amendment with the Treaty of Lisbon. In turn, the module covers four themes:
(A) The fundamental characteristics of the EU (Weeks 3-5). The students will explore the EU as a new legal order, the concepts of direct application and direct effect of EU law, as well as the values of the EU.
(B) Key EU principles (Weeks 6-9). The students will examine the principle of loyalty, and the competence delimitation between EU and Member States. The students will also explore the written and unwritten sources of EU law.
(C) EU Institutions (Weeks 10-12). The students will analyse the composition, functioning, and powers of the key EU institutions, i.e. the European Council, the Council of Ministers, the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the EU courts.
(D) Mechanisms of Judicial Protection (Week 13). The students will focus on the mechanisms of judicial review, public enforcement of EU law and preliminary reference procedure.
