Purpose of the Thematic Unit is the understanding of the Cypriot Constitution and the fundamental principles of Constitutional Law that govern the Cypriot legal order. The Thematic Unit begins with the study of Constitutional Law as a branch of Legal Science and analyzes the parameters of constitutional theory as well as the concepts and functions of the Constitution. The fundamental principles and sources of Cypriot Constitutional Law are also examined, in the context of the multiplicity of the Cypriot legal system, as well as the Cypriot constitutional history, which are an important interpretive tool for the character and parameters that govern, in particular, the Constitution. The essential provisions of the Constitution and the Cypriot state, the institutions of the Cypriot state as well as the tripartite separation of powers in the legal order of the Republic of Cyprus are also investigated. The role and the responsibilities of the Independent Officials are analyzed, while special emphasis is given to the issue of the analysis of the Law of Necessity and its role that plays in the Cypriot legal order. In addition, extensive reference is made to the issue of fundamental rights and freedoms in the Cypriot constitutional order.
