The Module ΠΠΑ512, “Cultural Policy and Cultural Management", refers to the management of culture and of the institutions that design and implement cultural policy at international and national level, with emphasis on Cyprus and Greece. It consists of two parts:
The first part provides the basic framework for discussing more applied concepts and practices related to cultural management.
The tutor explains the meaning and content of the term 'cultural policy' and the history of the field, as well as basic principles and dominant models that regulate the sector of culture. References are made to international examples, but emphasis is placed on the national level of Cyprus and Greece. The role of specific sectors in the exercise of cultural policy, such as international bodies, national museums, cultural industries, festivals and urban regeneration programmes, as well as cultural policy institutions, such as the European Capital of Culture, the UNESCO World Heritage Sites catalogue, the European Heritage Days, International Museum Day, etc.is presented in details.
The second part of the module refers to the development of skills for the perception and comparative analysis of cultural policies and strategies. It covers in depth the field of cultural management, which includes management strategies in states and organisations, funding and evaluation. It also highlights particular aspects of Cultural Policy and Cultural Management, related to the current cultural map of Cyprus and Greece, with reference to modern and/or ancient culture, cultural and creative industries, and international organisations.
The Module focuses in particular on:
- The concept of Cultural Policy and its individual principles and models
- The characteristics of Greek and Cypriot cultural policy
- The principles and characteristics of the cultural policy of the EU and international organisations
- Comparing cultural policy models applied by different countries
- The differences between forms of cultural management as they are shaped at the international level.
- The principles governing the structure, organisation and production of cultural activities with an emphasis on cultural heritage and the urban environment
- The cultural and creative industries of Greece and Cyprus
- The concept of Cultural Management and the profession of cultural manager
- The similarities and differences in the profession of cultural manager in the public, private and voluntary sectors.
