Three academics of the Open University of Cyprus among the top highly cited scientists in the world in their respective scientific fields

Three (3) Faculty members of the Open University of Cyprus (OUC) have been recognized among the world’s top scientists in their respective scientific fields in the updated (Aug. 2024) study entitled “Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators” published by a research team led by Professor John Ioannides, Stanford University. This prestigious ranking, based on bibliometric data, includes -for the fifth consecutive year since 2019- the following OUC academics:

  • Professor of Educational Theory and Curriculum Studies Michalinos Zembylas, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management and Director of the OUC MA Programme in “Educational Sciences”, in the field of Education.
  • Associate Professor Antonis Zorpas, Director of the OUC MSc Programme in “Sustainable Environmental Engineering”, head of the OUC Lab of Chemical Engineering and Engineering Sustainability, in the field of Environmental Sciences.
  • Associate Professor Jahna Otterbacher, Dean of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences and head of the Cyprus Centre for Algorithmic Transparency of the Open University of Cyprus, is amongst the world’s top scientists in the field of Artificial Intelligence, and amongst the very few female scientists in Cyprus in the career-long ranking list.

The selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a percentile rank of 2% or above in the sub-field. The study retrieves data from the SCOPUS database, and using a range of parameters for each scientist's research contribution and influence, compiles, as indicated by the authors of the ranking “a publicly available database of over 100.000 top-scientists from all scientific subjects (as well as those ranked in the top 2% in their main subfield discipline) that provides standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator.

Professor Stavros Stavrou, Rector of the Open University of Cyprus, warmly congratulates the three OUC academics for their inclusion in this prestigious list, and for the well-deserved recognition of the quality and productiveness of their research work. “We are deeply proud to see Professors Zembylas, Zorpas, and Otterbacher among the world’s top scientists in their fields, as recognized by this prestigious Stanford University ranking”. Their outstanding research contributions in Education, Environmental Sciences, and Artificial Intelligence reflect the commitment of the Open University of Cyprus to advancing impactful, globally relevant knowledge. This recognition highlights not only the exceptional quality of their work but also the role of OUC in fostering academic excellence and addressing critical challenges.
