The Postgraduate Programme in “Environmental Conservation and Management” and the Terrestrial Ecosystems Management Laboratory of the Open University of Cyprus are co-organising during the 2022/23 academic year their 5th Lecture Series with main theme “Women and Environmental Sciences”. All lectures will be delivered by women researchers and scientists in the fields of environmental sciences, and more specifically, climate change, terrestrial ecosystems management, wildlife preservation, biodiversity, etc.
The first online public talk is entitled ‘Women in Science: The Gender Gap and Visibility in Freshwater Sciences’, and will be delivered by Dr Ada Pastor (Postdoctoral Researcher, Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Girona) on Wednesday, October 19, 2022.
The lecture will start at 18:00 EEST (Cyprus local time), and be broadcasted live through the OUC eLearning Platform at this web link: https://bit.ly/3fJUO3K
Women in freshwater sciences have become more noticeable nowadays. However, as in other scientific fields, the female presence decreases at higher stages of their career. In this online talk, Dr Pastor will present the Gender and Science Group of the Iberian Society of Limnology and the activities that this group is conducting. She will particularly focus on the women´s participation, visibility, and gender barriers. The work of this Group shows that multiple aspects fostering the visibility of a scientist, such as presence in conferences, awards, or representation in societal or editorial boards show a significant gap, with none of those aspects showing a similar visibility of women and men in this research field. Concluding her presentation, Dr Pastor will discuss with the attendees of the session recommendations and proposals to reduce gender barriers in academia.
Dr Ada Pastor is a freshwater ecologist, focusing her research activity on aquatic biogeochemical processes. She was awarded her PhD in Ecology by the University of Barcelona and, during the last five years, she had been working at Aarhus University (Denmark), studying the sources and processes of nitrogen in Arctic freshwaters. She has recently moved to the University of Girona, where she is focusing her research on the biological nitrogen fixation in aquatic biofilms. She has been involved in several initiatives about gender equity in academia, and she is actively participating in the Gender & Science Group of the Iberian Society of Limnology (AIL) since its foundation in 2014. This group is working in several initiatives to advance towards gender equity in the field of limnology.
The 5th Lecture Series is supported by the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment of the Republic of Cyprus.
