The Commissioner for Environment, Ms. Klelia Vasiliou, is the invited speaker of an online public talk on “Biodiversity and ecosystem services", which is held in the context of the 4th Cycle of the Lecture Series on Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering and Chemical Engineering organized by the Postgraduate programme "Environmental Conservation and Management” of the Open University of Cyprus (OUC).

Focusing her talk on the biodiversity and ecosystemic services in Cyprus, the Environment Commissioner will refer on various human activities affecting environmental parameters, such as agriculture, animal husbandry, forest wealth, water resources, flora and fauna, renewable energy sources, sustainable energy. The objective, according to the Ms. Vasiliou, is that human interventions and environmental practices need to sustain a proper balance, so that profits outweigh losses and damages to the environment, to be in balance so that profit outweighs loss, adaptive potential and functional diversity of species is protected, and sustainable development is safeguarded.
Ms. Klelia Vasiliou was appointed Environment Commissioner by the President of the Republic of Cyprus on December 2019. Previously, she had serve as Executive Director of the Troodos Development Company, Deputy Cyprus Government Spokeswoman, and President of the Cyprus Forest Industries Public Ltd. She has also worked in various positions in the private sector gaining experience in sales, human resource management, political communication and marketing.
The Lecture Series, which is open to the public, is under the auspices of the Postgraduate Programme in "Environmental Conservation and Management”, is organized by the two research laboratories a) the Terrestrial Ecosystems Management Lab led by Professor Ioannis Vogiatzakis and b) the Chemical Engineering and Engineering Sustainability Lab led by Assistant Professor Antonis Zorpas. The Series is supported by the Office of the Environment Commissioner, the Cyprus Environmental Scientists and Engineers Association, the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber and Cyta.
